Pearls of Wisdom from Isaiah

For the sake of Jacob, my servant,

of Israel my chosen one,

I have called you [Cyrus] by name,

giving you a title, though you do not know me.

5I am the LORD, there is no other,

there is no God besides me.

It is I who arm you, though you do not know me,

6so that all may know, from the rising of the sun

to its setting, that there is none besides me.

I am the LORD, there is no other.

7I form the light, and create the darkness,

I make weal and create woe;

I, the LORD, do all these things.

8Let justice descend, you heavens, like dew from above,

like gentle rain let the clouds drop it down.

Let the earth open and salvation bud forth;

let righteousness spring up with them!*

I, the LORD, have created this.

Isaiah 45

Pearls of Wisdom from Elizabeth

During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah,

where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the infant leaped in her womb,

and Elizabeth, filled with the holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said,

“Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.

And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.

Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

Luke 1

THE FAITH OF SAINT JOSEPH

The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill
what the Lord had said through the prophet:

Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,

which means “God is with us.”
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.
He had no relations with her until she bore a son,
and he named him Jesus.

PEARLS OF WISDOM from Zechariah, father of John the Baptist

At the birth of his son Zechariah proclaimed:

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,

for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.

He has raised up a horn for our salvation within the house of David his servant,

even as he promised through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old:

salvation from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us,

to show mercy to our fathers and to be mindful of his holy covenant and of the oath he swore to Abraham our father,

and to grant us that, rescued from the hand of enemies,

without fear we might worship him in holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

And you, child, will be called prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord

to prepare his ways,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

through the forgiveness of their sins,

because of the tender mercy of our God by which the daybreak from on high will visit us

to shine on those who sit in darkness and death’s shadow,

to guide our feet into the path of peace.

Pearls of Wisdom from the Virgin Mary

MAGNIFICAT
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is from age to age
to those who fear him.
He has shown might with his arm,
dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.
He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones
but lifted up the lowly.
The hungry he has filled with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.
He has helped Israel his servant,
remembering his mercy,
according to his promise to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.
Luke 2:46-55

Pearls of Wisdom from Gabriel and Zechariah

The angel said to Zechariah, “I am Gabriel, who stand before God. I was sent to speak to you and to announce to you this good news:

Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He will drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb, and he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God.”

Zechariah said: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and brought redemption to his people.

Pearls of Wisdom from Juan Diego

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the persona of the Virgin Mary who appeared in 1531 to a Mexican Indian named Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin on the hill of Tepeyac near what is now Mexico City. Hispanic Catholics don’t think about the appearance; they live in it.

Pearls of Wisdom from Aurelius Prudentius Clemens

Of the Father’s love begotten

ere the worlds began to be,

He is Alpha and Omega;

He the source, the ending He,

of the things that are, that have been,

and that future years shall see

evermore and evermore!

O that birth forever blessed,

when a virgin, full of grace,

by the Holy Ghost conceiving,

bore the Savior of our race;

and the Babe, the world’s Redeemer,

first revealed his sacred face,

evermore and evermore!

O ye heights of heaven adore Him,

angel hosts, His praises sing,

pow’ers, dominions, bow before Him,

and extol our God and King;

let no tongue on earth be silent,

ev’ery voice in concert ring

evermore and evermore!

Christ, to Thee with God the Father

and, O Holy Ghost, to Thee,

hymn and chant and high thanksgiving

and unwearied praises be:

honor, glory, and dominion,

and eternal victory

evermore and evermore!
